NEEDED: Assistant Set Designer for In the Canyon

 

Sarah Harris’ set design for To Fall in Love by Jennifer Lane (2019). The production was directed by Jaimelyn Gray, and the set was constructed by Les Zarzecki. The Constructivists were then located at the Underground Collaborative.

Reporting To: Sarah Harris

Stipend: $200

Location: Milwaukee, Wisconsin; production will take place in the Studio Theater of the Broadway Theatre Center, 158 N. Broadway, Milwaukee

About Us:

We are a badass tiny team dedicated to producing visually stunning and sometimes immersive theatrical productions in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Our passion for the arts drives us to push the boundaries of set design and bring stories to life on stage. We are currently seeking an enthusiastic and talented Assistant Set Designer to join our team and support our Resident Set Designer, Sarah Harris who has a scheduling conflict before we open In the Canyon by Calamity West.

Job Description:

As an Assistant Set Designer, you will work closely with Sarah Harris and the production team to help create, design, and construct the set for our upcoming production of In the Canyon. This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to gain hands-on experience in set design and contribute to the creative process of theater production.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with Sarah Harris and the design team to develop and execute the In the Canyon set design.

  • Help source and select materials, props, and furniture for set construction.

  • Participate in set construction, painting, and installation.

  • Support the maintenance and organization of the set design workspace.

  • Attend production meetings and rehearsals as required.

  • Provide creative input and suggest innovative design solutions.

  • Ensure all designs adhere to safety and budgetary constraints.

Requirements:

  • A passion for theater and set design.

  • Strong creative and artistic skills.

  • Basic knowledge of set design principles and construction techniques.

  • Proficiency in design software is a plus.

  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.

  • Ability to work under tight deadlines and adapt to changing priorities.

  • Attention to detail and a proactive attitude.

Stipend:

We acknowledge that the stipend of $200 is crap. We are actively working towards improving this and providing better compensation for our team members. As Wisconsin currently ranks 49th in state funding for the arts, receiving funding for a small storefront company like ours is a challenge. We hope the experience of working with The Constructivists is an added benefit to the stipend.
