Class Description:
The Michael Chekhov Acting Technique is an approach to acting influenced by Stanislavski’s work, but which focuses more fully on movement and the actor’s imagination. It reminds actors that they are creative artists working with the powerful energy that flows through our bodies, and helps to keep us truthful in the moment as well as grounding the work in physical action. Also, it has the wonderful effect of helping actors to become more expressive in their movement work.
Laura Sturm, a Michael Chekhov Technique certified instructor, and Constructivists Artistic Director Jaimelyn Gray will work together to help actors discover how to utilize this method with text. Similar to real life, where a lot of the actor’s technique work is done outside of rehearsal, since not everyone works with the same technique (or frequently any technique at all), we’ll show you both how to do the work to shine in rehearsal and performance, and how to apply the work to a “normal” rehearsal process.
Laura will introduce the basic principles of the Michael Chekhov Acting Technique. With the text in mind, she’ll help you utilize your physical body and your imagination to help fuel your needs to rehearse a contemporary scene. Jaimelyn will then direct and coach actors in their scenes, like in a regular rehearsal process. There will be a final presentation of scenes following the last class on May 17th , from 1-2, to which actors can invite friends and family, if they like.
