THE CONSTRUCTIVISTS 21-22 SEASON ARRIVES WITH NEW PLAYS BY SILVERMAN AND GOLDFINGER AND A MOVE TO THE BROADWAY THEATRE CENTER

October 4, 2021 – (Milwaukee) The Constructivists are relieved and excited to officially release information on their upcoming 2021-22 Season. Their Fourth Season will open with WINK, by JEN SILVERMAN, running Saturday, October 23-Saturday through November 6, 2021, and end with BABEL, by JACQUELINE GOLDFINGER, opening Saturday, March 19, 2022 and running until Saturday, April 2, 2022. Both productions will be directed by Artistic Director JAIMELYN GRAY and call the Broadway Theatre Center Studio, 158 N. Broadway, Milwaukee, home. The season will also include their Under Construction playwriting workshop series this coming winter.

“As we are hoping the truly darkest days of the COVID-19 pandemic are behind us, I believe it’s time to get back to some seriously funny shit, however darkly comedic and Constructivistsly deep that art is,” said Jaimelyn Gray. “And we also hope these two dark comedies by two of the best contemporary female playwrights of today will be a cathartic relief to those still processing so much pain from the past almost two years of global isolation.”

WINK, BY JEN SILVERMAN

Wink is a 2019 play that follows unhappy housewife Sofie and her breadwinning husband, Gregor, who both seek weekly counseling from an unorthodox therapist, Doctor Frans. Their current topic of disagreement: the cat, Wink. When Wink goes missing, violent desires, domestic anarchy, and feline vengeance emerge, threatening the neatly ordered reality Sophie, Gregor, and Doctor Frans have constructed.

Jen Silverman is a two-time MacDowell Colony fellow, a recipient of a New York Foundation for the Arts grant, the Helen Merrill Award, an LMCC Fellowship, and the Yale Drama Series Award. She was the 2016–2017 Playwrights of New York (PoNY) Fellow at the Lark. She also writes for film and television.

BABEL, BY JACQUELINE GOLDFINGER

Babel is a 2020 dark comedy set in the near future. Two couples are having trouble getting pregnant and the lengths they go to in order to have a baby raises the specter of eugenics, explores the societal value of a baby, and asks us what we are willing to risk for love.

Jacqueline Goldfinger (She/They) won the Yale Drama Prize, Smith Prize, Generations Award, Brown Martin Award, Barrymore Award, and OPERA America Discovery Award (with Composer Melissa Dunphy). Her plays have been on The Kilroy’s List. She’s been a Finalist for the LAMBDA Literary Award, Henley Award, Woodward-Newman Award, and received a Special Citation from the McNally Award.

Under Construction Playwriting Series

The Constructivists will once again put the focus on new plays with its Under Construction Play Development Series this winter. Following the success of last season’s process with playwright featuring Eliza on the Ice, by Josiah Thomas Turner, The Constructivists are currently taking submissions from local BIPOC and particularly female-identifying playwrights in search of the next great dark comedy/drama.

The Big Move

The Constructivists are excited to move into the Broadway Theatre Center Studio for the 2021-22 Season and perform next to the great theatre artists of both Skylight Music and Milwaukee Chamber Theatres. While truly sad for the losses of both Underground Collaborative and 53212 Presents venues, they believe this move will help bring better attention to the dark art Milwaukee deserves in its mission to be a World Class Theatre city.

COVID Protocols

The Constructivists are joining other Milwaukee performing arts organizations in requiring proof of vaccination or negative Covid test within 72 hours of performance for all audience members ages 12 and up. In addition, The Constructivists requires audiences to be masked at all times while in the Broadway Theatre Center, regardless of vaccination status. Please review all COVID protocols and bring either your card or negative test result, and your ID, with you on your chosen performance day.
