When we opened THE GOD OF HELL at the end of September, Artistic Director Jaimelyn Gray was just about to begin rehearsals on another production: William Shakespeare's "Measure for Measure." Open Shepard on a Friday, start Shakespeare on Monday. Two Masters of Theatre, two very different productions.
But after a whirlwind six weeks, Aura Theatre Collective's #metoo focused "Measure" (their first production) opened last Thursday to critical and audience praise for a short two week run of just seven performances. Three remain – starting tonight.
"...a story that is sadly as relevant now as it’s ever been....a very compelling production." –RUSS BICKERSTAFF, THE SMALL STAGE (full review)
"Theatre has the potential to reveal, provoke, and engage. This piece does it all....Measure for Measure is not only relevant, but necessary." –KIMBERLY LABERGE, STAGE ON A PAGE (full review)
"Measure for Measure is known for its silent and open ending...Aura Theatre’s version is a gut punch and certainly the best reason to see this play." –JEAN-GABRIEL FERNANDEZ, THE SHEPHERD EXPRESS (full review)
Known as one of William Shakespeare's problem plays, Measure for Measure looks at a wide set of themes that remain relevant to modern era. This production will look at themes of the Me Too Movement as the story follows Isabelle, a novice nun who is blackmailed into yielding her chastity in exchange for her brother's life, who has been sentenced to death.
